This article explores how transportation and land-use planners can establish Freight-Efficient Land Uses (FELUs)—land-use patterns designed to minimize both the private costs and external costs associated with moving goods, guided by the findings of NCHRP Research Report 998: Planning Freight-Efficient Land Uses: Methodology, Strategies, and Tools. The article describes the need for FELUs and long-term planning strategies to foster FELUs.
